Ryan Penagos of Marvel just tweeted the image at left, the first official set photo of Hugh Jackman in director James Mangold’s much-anticipated X-Men film The Wolverine.
The film, which began filming in late July in Sydney, will be released July 26, 2013. It stars Jackman in the role that’s made him a worldwide star, in an adaptation of the fan-favorite “Japan era” from writer Chris Claremont and artist Frank Miller, creator of 300, Sin City and The Dark Knight Returns.
A number of set photos have leaked, including some which depicted Jackman in a long wig and beard. The first teaser poster for the film, which was leaked months ago, was officially released recently, depicting Wolverine’s claws slicing the Japanese flag. This is the first image officially released by 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios in promotion of the film, however.
“Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan,” the film’s Facebook page reads. “There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.”
