Spoiler Alert banned

Lake Superior State University has issued their 38th annual List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. Making the list was one particular word combination which gets used quite frequently on this site and other comic book, movie, and TV sites. Yes, the ever popular spoiler alert is on the list of words which Lake Superior State University feels should be banned. Why ban spoiler alert? Well, the feeling is that spoiler alert has gone from being a polite warning to a declarative statement. Often major news outlets will spoil something in the headline and then follow it with a tiny spoiler alert. Also, the feeling is that the term is often overused. According to a quote on the site, spoiler alert is being used in "an obnoxious way to show one has trivial information." When every major news outlet tends to spoil comic books, movie, and TV plot points in headlines anyway has the term spoiler alert outlived its usefulness? Should fans just assume that if you go online now that you're going to get spoiled? Do you agree that spoiler alert should be banned? Or is it still the best term to use for those who want to read online about an upcoming comic book, movie, or TV show without having to worry about having the ending spoiled? Assuming spoiler alert survives making the list, when do you think it should be utilized? Should it only be used for major "ruin the ending" type spoilers? Should it still be used even after a comic book or movie has been released? Or once something has been officially released is saying spoiler alert just overkill?
