Iron Man in Guardians of the Galaxy

There has been lots of chatter and rumors about the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Back in November 2012, Comicbook.com reported on a tip we had received that Iron Man would be linking up with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the movie universe as well as the comic book universe. And despite early denials, an Iron Man 3 deep space suit toy and an interesting reference by Robert Downey Jr. to Avengers in the atmosphere have left many wondering. In a new interview with Brian Michael Bendis posted by Westfield Comics, the writer of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series opened up with some details about the comic, which arrives in comic book stores in February. In describing the Guardians of the Galaxy, Bendis said, "For those who only know a little bit about Marvel, they're kinda like the Cosmic Avengers. They're very similar to the Avengers in that they're this group of characters that you couldn't possibly imagine getting together to be a team." Or as Robert Downey Jr. might describe them, they are Avengers in the atmosphere. When asked how Iron Man fits in with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Bendis said, "We're going to come to him at a time where he's met the Guardians recently and has become quite enamored with what's going on in the galaxy. The futurist in Tony, the inventor, the scientist, is completely drawn to other technologies, other species, just this whole world beyond what he's capable of – and he's capable of so much. So he decides to take kind of a working vacation up into the galaxy to look at the Earth from a different perspective and see what the next level of his work should be as a superhero and as a scientist. He ends up teaming up with the Guardians because immediately you see that there's something going on. The Earth is in a lot of trouble from galactic threats and the Guardians and Tony are just the guys to dig in and do something about it." Bendis also added, "It's a lot of fun to have Tony on it. First of all, it's a great new chapter in Tony Stark's character evolution. This is absolutely something he would do. You could totally see him doing this once he's perfected his armor; he's too itchy to just sit around and be Iron Man. The scientist and futurist needs to see more and more and this brings him out there. On top of it, we're having a lot of fun with Tony being the fish out of water because Tony's never the fish out of water. Even on his worst day, Tony's in charge; he has a handle on it. Or at least he's got the cocky swagger to get him through it. But being out in outer space, even though he's visited before, he hasn't lived there. It's a whole different thing. Living in Hawaii and vacationing in Hawaii are two totally different things. That is what he's going to be dealing with. Plus, he had these really insane fantasies of living the Captain Kirk lifestyle and banging green ladies and stuff and that all goes to hell for him. It's a lot of fun to write." Now, it's still unconfirmed of course that Iron Man will join the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well, but if he does, then the comics might be providing us with some early insight as to why.
