General Zod

In spite of the fact that we doubted the rumors in the first place, and then showed some evidence that it's not true, a certain rumor continues to circulate back to us via fans wondering about Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman reboot. "In [Man of Steel], Clark Kent's heroic tendencies would rise to the surface only when the threat was great enough. It would have to be a global menace — one that might also trigger an internal conflict about whether he belongs on Earth even as he yearns to be among his own kind. That's what pits him against General Zod, a Kryptonian tyrant who wants Clark to join him back on Krypton, which would mean abandoning his post as defender of the weaklings of Earth," said Entertainment Weekly in their summer preview issue, leading fans to speculate that Krypton might actually not die in the film. But shortly thereafter, Warner Bros. began releasing their movie tie-in books, starting with the kids' editions, and one of those books featured an image of Superman's rocket being blasted away from a clearly-exploding Krypton. We speculated that because Zod, in all previous iterations of the character, has spent some time in the Phantom Zone that perhaps the conflicting stories could be reconciled by the character having no knowledge of his planet's fate. In any event, another of the Man of Steel tie-in books brings us the image at left, which says that after the destruction of Krypton, Zod finds Earth while searching for a new home. So, again, Krypton appears to be done for.
