Man of Steel Now Top-Grossing Superman Film of All Time Worldwide

Man of Steel

is estimated to have made more than $188 million in its first two weeks of release internationally, which combines with its $210 million in the U.S. to make it the highest-grossing Superman film of all time at $398 million. That's right--in the less-than-an-hour since we wrote up our weekend domestic box office estimates, the international numbers have come in and the film has done about $50 million better than we had heard estimates, meaning that rather than $350 million, the film is closing in on $400 million after opening in 29 new markets this weekend. Superman Returns, the previous title-holder, had grossed $391 million during its entire theatrical release back in 2006. Adjusted for ticket price inflation, Superman: The Movie is still the top film in the franchise's history, with a domestic box office that translates roughly to $455 million in today's dollars. Man of Steel also rates fifth at the domestic box office so far this year, behind Iron Man 3, The Great and Powerful Oz, Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Into Darkness. At only $6 million behind Star Trek and $24.5 million behind Oz, it's likely that the film will be second only to Iron Man by the end of next weekend. Iron Man 3's $403 million domestic (and counting) will likely be tough to top. Other only major blockbusters coming this year that are expected to have a shot at challenging Iron Man and Superman's supremacy include Despicable Me 2 and Pacific Rim.
