Projections suggest that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will knock Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy out of the top spot at the box office this weekend, according to The Wrap.

Guardians had a record-breaking opening weekend, and it sustained that momentum going into the first half of the workweek.

On the other hand, Turtles has the backing of a legion of children eager to see the characters return to the big screen for the first time since 2007's TMNT. It's also currently leading Guardians in advance ticket sales via Fandango.

Word of mouth is still strong for Guardians though, and both films are expected to top $45 million over the weekend.

Other films opening this weekend include the disaster thriller Into the Storm, food drama The Hundred-Foot Journey, and dance film Step Up All In.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8.
