Ghostbusters Director Ivan Reitman Opens Up About Why He Won't Do Ghostbusters 3

During an interview in support of the home video release of the film Draft Day, veteran comedy director Ivan Reitman told Superhero Hype that he's still "very involved" with the upcoming, third Ghostbusters movie in spite of his decision to abandon his role as the film's director back in March.

He also referred to the film -- which recently has been the subject of "reboot" rather than sequel rumors, as potentially benefiting from another director's point of view. It's been 30 years since Reitman launched the franchise with Ghostbusters and 25 since he directed its sequel, Ghostbusters II. Harold Ramis, who co-wrote both of the films and had been working on a script for the third movie with Reitman for years, passed away in February.

"I am very involved. I'm a producer of the film," Reitman said. "I wasn't giving it all up. I suddenly felt that Ghostbusters didn't necessarily need me as a director, at least I didn't need to direct Ghostbusters, let me put it that way. Having done the other two and with the passing of Harold and with Bill Murray seeming disinterested being in it, I thought it was better for me just to produce it and to make sure we're going to have the quality and style of what is appropriate for another version of that film. But the franchise could benefit from somebody else's point of view. I've done it twice before and it will be great to get somebody else to lend a hand as well."

Ghostbusters III is expected to begin filming in early 2015. The most recent round of rumors has Paul Feig directing.
