Earlier today, we reported that projections indicated that Guardians of the Galaxy would pass The Lego Movie once Thursday box office numbers were released. The official numbers are now out, and Guardians of the Galaxy did indeed pass The Lego Movie as projected.

On Thursday, Guardians of the Galaxy took in $1,562,456 at the U.S. box office, bringing the film's total domestic box office take to $258,297,268. It was more than enough to pass the $257,750,402 U.S. box office gross of The Lego Movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy 's move into second place now means that Marvel Studios has the top two highest grossing films of 2014 year to date at the U.S. box office. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is still the highest grossing film of 2014 at the U.S box office with a total take of $259,766,572.

Sometime today, Guardians of the Galaxy should overtake Captain America: The Winter Soldier to become the highest grossing 2014 movie at the U.S. box office. Of course, even when that happens, Marvel Studios will still have the highest two grossing movies of the year. Marvel Studios dominance is so big it's starting to seem like Marvel Studios only real competition is itself.
