Those who were predicting that Guardians of the Galaxy would be Marvel Studios first failure must feel pretty silly right now. The movie starring a group of Marvel Comics characters that most had never heard of is now officially the highest grossing film of 2014 at the U.S. box office.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have triumphed over Captain America, LEGOS, Spider-Man, the X-Men, Transformers, Godzilla, Maleficent, and even a planet of apes. According to projections, Guardians of the Galaxy took in $3.5 million at the U.S. box office on Friday, which would bring the film's total box office to around $261.8 million.

To take the #1 spot, Guardians of the Galaxy pushed Captain America: The Winter Soldier into the #2 spot. Now, the question becomes, how high will the Guardians of the Galaxy rise? Early projections have Guardians of the Galaxy winning Labor Day weekend with a projected $19 million at the U.S. box office. Could Guardians of the Galaxy be on its way to becoming the first film to gross over $300 million at the U.S. box office in 2014?

Upon hearing the news that Guardians of the Galaxy had reached the top spot, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn wrote, "My fellow Guardians and I are proud to be, as of today, the top grossing film of 2014 in America."
