Jesse Eisenberg on the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Script: I Would Do It For Free

While just about everybody reported on some teases of Lex Luthor's characterization that appeared in a Jesse Eisenberg interview printed in this week's Total Film, it's just as interesting to see what a positive response the actor had to the film's script, according to the same interview.

Admitting that he'd never read comics before, and hadn't seen any comic book movies, Eisenberg said that he watched Superman: The Movie ("that movie with Gene Hackman in it") after he got the role, and dove into the comics.

He isn't on board for the long-term career plan, he said, because his father always taught him that if you approach life that way, the long-term plans often don't pan out.

"They asked me if I would play the part before they sent me the script," he admitted. "I'm not sure how it worked, but it's something I read with the understanding that I could do the role, if I...you know, they don't just hand the scripts out. But I really liked it on its own terms. I would do it if it was for free and it was tiny."

Fans, of course, often lash out against comic book movie stars who don't read comics, fearing they won't understand the source material -- and that goes double for younger stars who don't have the benefit of having grown up in a world without Tim Burton's Batman. It may comfort some fans to know that, when informed about how great Heath Ledger's Joker was in The Dark Knight, Eisenberg apparently asked about Keaton's Batman as well.

It's a start...

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is expected in theaters on March 25, 2016.
