The first official trailer for The New Mutants was released early Friday morning, and, much to the surprise of comic fans, it didn't feel much like the other X-Men films. The teen-centric movie looks much more like a horror flick than a superhero blockbuster.

There's clearly a major contrast between the on-screen styles of New Mutants and the X-Men, leaving many wondering if this new film would even take place in the same universe as the others. If that was your concern, you needn't worry, because director Josh Boone has set the record straight.

While speaking with IGN, Boone was asked if other well-known mutants would pop up his film. "I can't... there's some things I can't talk about," Boone began. "I can just say it is connected to and a part of the X-Men universe, and will continue to be a part of the X-Men universe and will be a part of that as it opens up in the next movies and all that."

"Every video complains online about characters that aren't in it right now," Boone added. "I will say we're going to introduce new characters in the next movie as well. Characters like Karma and Warlock, and all that will be in future movies."

So, New Mutants definitely connects to the other films, and we'll be seeing some more popular mutants in future films. However, with the tones of the various X-Men projects being so vastly different, won't there be problems when they try to crossover?

"I do think about these things because... ours is very different tonally from an X-Men movie and from Deadpool and all that," Boone said. "I find it interesting to imagine it... It's not necessarily problematic, but more it'll be interesting to see how they do actually do all that, if they make them be in the same film at the same time; it'll be an interesting tonal palette."

The New Mutants is set to hit theaters on April 13, 2018.
