The Starks have been warning us for years that “winter is coming.” Now it’s here, and it’s messing with the Game of Thrones production schedule.

Game of Thrones Season 6 premiered a bit later than usual, coming at the end of April rather than the beginning. Now showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff say that Season 7 won’t premiere in April at all, and they’re blaming it on the weather.
“We don’t have an air date yet but this year it’ll probably be a little bit later,” Weiss said during an episode of the UFC Unfiltered podcast. “We’re starting a bit later because you know, the end of this season, winter is here and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes anymore. So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, gray weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”
Weiss and Benioff also reiterated that the show has two seasons left, but that they have not finalized the episode count just yet. You can take a listen to the full podcast here:
In case you’re a sweet summer child, we should tell you that the coming of winter after a long summer means a whole lot more to Westeros than just a calendar bump, including a much more hospitable climate for the White Walker army. Good thing that there are some dragons on the way to warm things up.
Game of Thrones Season 7 will premiere on HBO in 2017.
