Rogue One: A Star Wars Story earned $71 million on Friday, including $29 million in early Thursday screenings, and is set to win the weekend with a $150 million 3-day take.
In addition to that, Rogue One is opening in all major international markets this weekend, including China and South Korea, which could mean an additional 300 million coming in from overseas for the first Star Wars standalone movie.
None of that really compares to the record-breaking box office returns of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, but it is the third-best opening weekend box office of 2016, behind Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and could crack the top 15 of all time.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was made for about $200 million, not counting marketing costs. Lucasfilm and Disney will surely be happy to see that money recuperated, and then some, in just 3 days.
