Today, the world mourns the loss of one very talent actress. Earlier this morning, Carrie Fisher passed away at age 60 whilst surrounded by family and friends. The actress was hospitalized shortly before Christmas after suffering a heart attack while on a flight home from London. Now, fans of the Star Wars franchise are left to grapple with the sudden loss, and Lucasfilm‘s Kathleen Kennedy has now released a statement about Fisher’s passing.

The president shared her thoughts in a recently posted update to the Star Wars website. She wrote, “Carrie holds such a special place in the hearts of everyone at Lucasfilm it is difficult to think of a world without her. She was Princess Leia to the world but a very special friend to all of us.”

“She had an indomitable spirit, incredible wit, and a loving heart. Carrie also defined the female hero of our age over a generation ago. Her groundbreaking role as Princess Leia served as an inspiration of power and confidence for young girls everywhere. We will miss her dearly.”

Of course, Kennedy is not the only community member to speak out about Fisher’s passing. Mark Hamill took to Twitter and shared heart-wrenching message, saying he had no words to describe the loss he feels. And, not long ago, Harrison Ford released a statement about Fisher’s death that described her as “one-of-a-kind” and “emotionally fearless.”

In the coming days, fans will continue to pour out their love and memorials for Fisher whilst coming to terms with the loss. Later this year, Fisher will be seen back in theaters as General Leia Organa when Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters. Right now, the future of the franchise is unclear, but fans are willing to overlook that uncertainty in favor of mourning Fisher with all the proper respect she deserves.
