Jack Kirby Easter Eggs Found In Thor: Ragnarok Trailer

Marvel Studios today released the first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, the third solo outing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Asgardian God of Thunder.

While Thor is loosely based on the character from Norse mythology, Marvel’s version of Thor was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Specifically, Thor is one of the most Kirby-esque of Kirby’s Marvel creations.

The trailer for Thor: Ragnarok showed the film is going to pay tribute to Kirby by bringing the legendary artist’s definitive art style to life in a way that no Marvel Studios production has done so far.

While much of this is stylistic, there are a few very specific nods to “The King” of comics that were present in the Thor: Ragnarok trailer. Keep reading through the slides and we’ll fill you in on what they were.

Kirby Design

Jack Kirby was known for his unique sense of design and specifically how he drew superhero costumes and technology.

Kirby’s designs often involve round adornments connected by thick, jagged lines.

Some of that is present in the designs on the back wall of Grandmaster’s booth in the arena during the Thor: Ragnarok trailer. In fact, there’s a portion of the design that seems to be lifted straight off of a piece of technology that Kirby drew in an issue of Fantastic Four.

Mini-Celestial

Some fans may notice an interesting looking character standing over Grandmaster’s shoulder in the arena booth.

The character is designed distinctly in Jack Kirby’s style, with intricate round embellishments and lines running through, and the head without traditional, humanoid eyes.

The character somewhat resembles a miniature Celestial, one of the almighty beings who seed life throughout the galaxy, created by Kirby during the Bronze Age of Comics.

The Celestials have already been referenced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, described as the original wielders of the Infinity Stones during the Collector’s explanation in Guardians of the Galaxy, but whoever this guy is, he certainly bares a resemblance.

Kirby Krackle

Jack Kirby’s work is so influential that he invented an artistic device that is still used by artists to this day.

To represent explosions and bursts of energy, Kirby would create a black background and populate the area with fractal shapes. The use the device was said to show something was “crackling” energy.

The style is sometimes called “Kirby Dots,” because Kirby would often use round shapes within the black background.

The Thor: Ragnarok logo shown at the end of the trailer is bursting with Kirby Dots, or should we say crackling with Kirby energy. It looks cool, and it perhaps shows some artistic intent on the part of director Taika Waititi, who seems to want the entire movie to be full of Kirby’s energy.
