When moviegoers talk about bad films, it’s only a matter of time before Dragonball Evolution gets referenced. The film was meant to adapt Akira Toriyama‘s acclaimed manga into live-action, but the film managed to ruin anime films for Hollywood in one unforgivable blow.

So, you may want to think twice before you read the original script for Dragonball Evolution.

That’s right; Ben Ramsey’s first script for the live-action movie is on the Internet, and you can read it all you want. The script first leaked before Dragonball Evolution ever premiered, but it was scrubbed hard from the Internet. However, nothing is ever truly deleted from the web, and you can check out the script here if you’d like.

According to reports, Ramsey was paid a cool $500,000 for his Dragonball Evolution script and walked away from the project. The script was then excised and put back together by producers who clearly knew nothing of Dragon Ball. And, well – fans know what happened after that.

If you think the Dragonball Evolution script may be worse than the film itself, you may be pleasantly surprised. Fans have long complained the movie took no initiative to research Toriyama’s series, but Ramsey clearly did some work for his first script. After all, the treatment was given the simple title, “Dragon Ball Z.”

There’s plenty to read through in the original script, but there are some high points. Many fans will be happy to hear that Pilaf, Mai, the Ox King, and Krillin all appear in the first script. The latter hero may only appear for a scene or so, but he’s there at last.

It’s been years since Dragonball Evolution debuted, but the film’s legacy lives on. Ramsey went so far as to issue an apology to fans for the film, saying he took “full responsibility for what was such a disappointment to so many fans.” The writer may have had missteps with his script, but his first go at Dragonball Evolution sounds more in-line with the story Toriyama created so many years ago. Now, it’s up for fans to decide whether they’ll ever be ready for Son Goku to be brought to life once again.
