The Mortal Kombat video game franchise has sold over 35 million units since it launched, in spite of harsh ratings for graphic violence on every game in the series.

The films were somewhat more tame, and also much less beloved, and the film franchise broke down in 1997 after just two installments.

Besides video games and films, Mortal Kombat has appeared in comic books, TV and webseries in addition to a best-selling score/soundtrack CD.

Wan’s involvement, given his rising star in Hollywood following the successes of Insidious and Furious 7, virtually guarantees the film will pick up speed, which is good for New Line as the reboot has been stalled in production for a while now.
