Following Wolverine’s death comes the revelation that a new, more advanced version of Weapon X – the organization that took Logan’s memories, grafted adamantium to his bones, and turned him into a killing machine – is growing in the shadows of the Marvel Universe. This series, with ties Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy, will explore what Weapon X does once its prized specimen is no more.

The series, which kicks off in November, will be written by Death of Wolverine architect Charles Soule, and drawn by Salvador Larroca.

We reached out to Larroca to talk about the Weapon X Program back to life.

You have a long history of working on comics related to the X-Men franchise. What keeps you coming to back to these characters?

Well, these are characters that I used to read when I was a child. I grew up with them, and they have been my favorites for years. To me, they are much more than just characters. They’re family.

With Wolverine out of the picture, the series will obviously be forced to shift focus onto other characters. What characters are you most looking forward to getting to draw for this series?

These characters are all new. Some of them have already been designed, others have to be done from scratch. I think some them will be important characters in the future. I can’t wait to start on them. I’m trying to make them different from the current or past Weapon X guys.

You’re getting to illustrate a whole new version of Weapon X. What kind of look and feel are you hoping to bring to this new version of one of Marvel’s most notorious organizations?

It will be designed following the requests of the plots. We’ll see, but I think we will continue from the past storylines and looks. I think the look of Weapon X has been pretty well established from past stories and even the films, so most of the job has been done already.

What kind of narrative tone are you trying to set for this series? Will it be military action, or will it lean a little more towards intrigue?

We’ll have all of that and more.

Weapon X has had some talented artists associated with it in the past. Have you looked at anyone’s previous work for reference, are you trying to make this as uniquely your own as possible?

Yes, sure. I love all of them, especially the Barry Windsor-Smith stuff, but it will mostly be defined by the tone of the story. It depends a lot on the plots. I’ll try to fit the style and the mood that the writer [Charles Soule] needs from me. We’re a team!
