That opening just barely edged out The Hunger Games to crack the top ten biggest single-day grosses in movie history. Every movie in the top ten now is a part of a larger franchise, often fairly far down the line…and something that might speak volumes about the box office potential for Fast & Furious 8 and beyond: Excepting Marvel’s The Avengers, all of the other franchises are either over, or will be by the time the next Fast & Furious is released.

Those franchises include the Dark Knight trilogy, Harry PotterTwilightThe Hunger Games and Iron Man.

The previous April title-holder for the biggest opening day (and weekend) was last year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The film is expected to easily surpass $100 million in its opening frame and could take as much as $150 million over the holiday weekend. Last year, only two films opened with more than $100 million — Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One

To date, the biggest opening for a Fast and Furious movie is the previous installment, Fast & Furious 6, which opened at $97 million.
