In particular, he was asked about Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, a particularly notable film because it resurrected a flagging franchise by becoming the highest-grossing X-Men film yet and reversing the trend of a franchise whose box office receipts had been in free fall for a decade.
“I’ve been thinking about Days of Future Past a lot, which I had nothing to do with, in terms of the resurrection of a franchise. I think they did a very good job with that,” Feige said. “On Iron Man 3, I thought a lot about [X-Men: The Last Stand] and Spider-Man 3 and I thought a lot about Toy Story 3, and how to avoid falling into threequelitis, which is why we went down a lot of the roads we went down on that movie.”
It is, of course, difficult to judge success by box office alone; while Iron Man 3 had the biggest domestic haul this side of The Avengers when it was in theaters, for years now X-Men: The Last Stand had actually been the highest-grossing X-Men movie.
That said, approval from Feige is quite an accomplishment, considering the long-standing rumors of acrimony between Marvel and Fox. The studio that controls the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises is also thought to have run afoul of Marvel by hurrying their version of Quicksilver to market ahead of Marvel’s own in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
