Earlier this week, we reported on rumors that classic Star Trek cast members William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy would reunite to play their respective character, Captain James T. Kirk and Spock, in Star Trek 3.

Since then, the film’s director and co-writer, Roberto Orci, has weighed in on the subject, refuses to confirm or deny either way. Orci commented on the fan site TrekMovie.com, first saying:
love no win scenarios. In theory, damned either way.
And then a day later, adding:
Not in my interest to confirm or deny anything because it limits my options while maintaining my integrity as a truth teller.
The movie is not the movie till it is in the theater. Until then, everything is a rumor.
William Shatner also commented on the rumors via his Twitter account, and was much less coy about it:
Let’s talk ST. I don’t know anything about the current gossip. Nobody has contacted me. Right now it’s just rhetoric to cause hype.

Now, it is possible that the rumor is still true, and Shatner just hasn’t heard about it. Orci and then writing partner, Alex Kurtzman, are said to have written a scene for Shatner in 2009’s Star Trek, but decided to leave it out of the film before Shatner was ever involved in the conversation. It’s possible that the same path is being walked in this case as well.
Star Trek 3 is expected in theaters sometime in 2016.
