Saga has earned itself a legion of fans since its 2012 debut – but could its story make its way to the world of live-action?

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Saga writer Brian K. Vaughan addressed the possibility of the epic space-opera series earning a film or television adaptation. As Vaughan put it, the series is almost too esoteric to correctly pull off in another medium — at least, for now.
“You know, I still probably think not yet.” Vaughan revealed. “But I wouldn’t have imagined what was possible with Runaways now being possible 15 years ago โฆ so, maybe in 15 years we will have caught up. I still think for now, I flatter myself to think Fiona and I are doing something that celebrates what only comics can do, which is the scope beyond a Hollywood blockbuster in terms of the visuals, but also a challenging grown-up story like you would get in a long-form TV drama. I think it’s still very difficult, with what we’re trying to say and do, for that to be done in film and television.”
But with that in mind, Vaughan certainly would be willing to see Saga brought into the world of live-action, it just isn’t a major priority for him.
“I remain not completely opposed to it.” Vaughan added. “But for me, it’s so not the goal. I would rather just keep my head down and keep making a great comic book, then get out there and chase a great adaptation.”
Vaughn created Saga with artist Fiona Staples in 2012. The series is published by Image Comics and has run for 48 issues so far with no indication of slowing down. The series is a space opera influenced by Star Wars that focuses on Marko and Alana, a husband and wife from opposing armies in a cosmic war that has gone on for generations, who do what they’ve been told is impossible by having a mixed-species child. The existence of this child makes the family a threat to both sides of the war, and so the family has been forced to live on the run and in hiding.
If Saga were to make the leap to live-action, it wouldn’t be too hard to begin populating its cast. Thor: Ragnarok‘s Tessa Thompson recently delighted many fans on Twitter, as she voiced an interest in playing Saga‘s Alana.
