When comic book readers think of Captain America, they think of a man who has a strong moral code that would always do what he feels is right. They would imagine a man who always stood for what is noble and gave his life fighting for a good cause. Captain America has always been someone that many can get behind, a man who has always been the epitome of what a hero should be. This was especially true during his time in the Gold and Silver Ages of Comics, where he represented America during times of turmoil.

However, these strong morals have brought Captain America into opposition with other members of the Avengers. His strong beliefs butt heads with those of other superheroes, which has caused moments of tension and conflict. This has even led to blows between Captain America and others, as they have clashed due to beliefs and personal moral codes. This has shown that while it can be good to have a strong moral code to stand by, sometimes that code can cause friction with others who also strongly believe in an ideal of their own.
These are 4 examples of moments in Marvel lore where Captain America has had to take a stand… against his fellow Avengers.
4) Operation: Galactic Storm

The “Operation: Galactic Storm” storyline sees the Avengers intervene in an intergalactic war between the Kree and Shi’ar empires. In the aftermath of the war, Captain America is disappointed in his teammates and the Avengers team concept as a whole. This fallout creates a schism between Captain America and Iron Man, with the latter leaving to start his own group. This is a good example of Captain America giving orders and having them disobeyed, leading to conflict between Cap and the rest of the team.
3) Standing Against Marvel’s Illuminati

The Illuminati was a secret group that included a number of the Avengers, such as Iron Man and Captain America. The group operated as a sort of inner-circle group that made a lot of decisions behind the scenes, including the building of a doomsday machine. However, that decision rubbed Captain America the wrong way, as he felt that the conversation would shift from whether they should build it to whether or not they should use it. This brings Steve Rogers into opposition with the rest of the Illuminati, who take action against him. The group kicks Captain America out and wipes his memory of their existence, showing what happens when one causes friction within the cabal.
2) “Hail Hydra”

One of the biggest surprises in Marvel history came when Captain America said the words “Hail Hydra” at the end of the first issue of Captain America: Steve Rogers. While it was later explained that this was a Captain America from another timeline where Steve Rogers was recruited by Hydra, it still gave fans a version of the hero who aligned himself with evil. This Captain America was a spy for the terrorist group that would oppose the Avengers, lining up his beliefs and morals against Earth’s mightiest heroes.
1) Marvel’s Civil War

The “Civil War” event was the ultimate showing of Captain America coming to conflict with other members of the Avengers due to his morals. Iron Man believed that superheroes should register their true identities with the government, which Steve Rogers vehemently opposed. This causes severe conflict within the Avengers, turning hero against hero. “Civil War” was the best example of Captain America following his moral code no matter what, even if it would turn those he would consider allies against him. The event ends with the hero being arrested and later assassinated, a strong showing of what can happen to someone who follows their ethics, no matter the cost.
