J.K. Simmons has made it clear that he wants a Commissioner Gordon who can hold his own, even alongside the myths and legends that make up the Justice League.

The talented actor spoke about his role in the upcoming team film to Entertainment Tonight, where he not only emphasized the character's independence but also hinted at his future hopes for the part.

"In the comics, he's a pretty tough guy. He's not just this comic relief," he explained. "In the first film that we're currently shooting [Justice League], my part is not as big as, knock wood, it will be in some of the future films...but the plan is if that there will be more Commissioner Gordon in the future. And I have absolutely no idea, zero idea, but I'm lobbying right now: let Commissioner Gordon be a badass."

The actor would most likely resurface in the standalone Batman film that Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns are writing, but he could still pop up in small roles along the way. He was then asked if he has requested any pointers from former Commissioner Gary Oldman.

"I have not, although our kids have been in school together," he revealed. "Actors like to do their own thing. Gary Oldman is a great, great actor, and I think he was awesome as Commissioner Gordon, and I'm doing a different version."

In a previous interview about the role, Simmons further expressed his want of a character that isn't so reliant on Batman's help.

"You're living in a universe where it's pretty tough to be a badass compared to somebody like Batman, but in the universe of non-superheroes I like the idea of Commissioner Gordon as a guy that can take care of himself, a guy that's a real partner to Batman, not just a guy that turns on the bat signal and goes, 'Help! Help, Batman!'"
