Henry Cavill Sent Touching Gifts To Thank The Justice League Crew

Despite a few notable duds, comic book movies have done well when it comes to casting the human equivalent to some very famous heroes. For instance, Robert Downey Jr. has become Tony Stark for all intents and purposes – you know, just without the armor. Warner Bros. has also kept a tidy track record by casting talent like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, but it is Henry Cavill who truly mirrors his role. The lumbering actor is very much like Superman, and the gracious actor just had one of his quieter and more honorable moments shared on the Internet.

Last year, filming on Justice League wrapped after a few long months of production, but Cavill has not forgotten about all those who worked on the film. Over on Instagram, Sherice Griffiths commemorated her time on-set as crew member by sharing a picture of a gift which Cavill sent to the whole crew.

“Nice little crew gift in the post today. Thank you Henry,” she wrote. The present itself looks to be an engraved, brush metal badge featured the Justice League initials. In the back, fans can see that a photo of the crew was sent as well. A short card also came with the present, and its words can be read below:

“It has been quite the battle shooting this movie, but I could imagine no better people to have struggled alongside. Thank you so much for your hard work, tenacity and great humour! See you next time, it has been an absolute pleasure!”

The gift, in spite of its shape, is what’s known as a challenge coin.

A challenge coin is a small coin or medallion (usually military but, as in this case, not necessarily), bearing an organization’s insignia or emblem and carried by the organization’s members. Traditionally, they are given to prove membership when challenged and to enhance morale. In addition, they are also collected by service members. In practice, challenge coins are normally presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement by a member of the unit. They are also exchanged in recognition of visits to an organization.

When James Gunn distributed them to members of the U.S. military during a special screening of Guardians of the Galaxy, we noted that organizations often use the coins in a drinking game: a challenger presents their coin, prompting other members of the organization to do so as well. If all members have their coin on their person, the challenger has to buy a round of drinks. If someone fails to present one, they have to buy.

Cavill gave challenge coins to crew members following Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg.
