The Flash made its big season 3 reveal by finally letting fans see who was hiding inside of Savitar’s armor – and it was none other than a future version of Barry Allen.

That reveal has set off a massive buzz of fan reaction, one that has prompted a big discussion of whether Future Barry/Savitar is a good or bad thing for the show. Now the showrunners are speaking out, taking on the fan reaction by discussing the Savitar reveal – and what it means for the show’s future.

The Future of Evil Future Barry

The Flashย executive producer Andrew Kreisbergย was recently talking toย EW aboutย the Savitarย reveal, and shared his thoughts about how it will affect the future ofย The Flash. Long story short? It’s going to be confusing for the characters – but fun for the actors.ย

According to Kreisberg,ย “It’s a real ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’ It creates an interesting paradigm because Savitar has probably done as much, if not more, to hurt them as any villain they’ve ever come up against, and yet Barry has a measure of sympathy for him. It’s a really interesting new dynamic that’s certainly very different from his relationship with Wells/Thawne in season 1 and Zoom in season 2.”

Comic books like X-Men have mined a lot of rich material out of ย a hero/villain relationship where the hero has a measure of love and respect for the hero. For Barry, this will be especially tricky, as he tends to look for the good in people and believes it will ultimately triumph over their evil inclinations. When it comes to himself, it would only be natural for Barry to want to believe in redemption – because he basicallyย has to, lest he plummet down the dark spiral of self-hatred.ย

Behind the scenes, Kreisbergย spotlights the fun opportunity which now stands beforeย The Flash’sย lead actor, Grant Gustin:

ย

“What’s so amazing about these last few episodes, especially when you think about it in terms of ‘Once and Future Flash,’ is Grant made the future Flash a very distinct character.ย He does the same with Savitar, especially in scenes where he has to act with himself. If everything Grant has done up until now, including the musical, hasn’t blown you away with his talent, I think when you see scenes of him and Savitar together, you’re really going to be blown away because he’s found a whole new speed for him.”
