When Gal Gadot debuted as Diana Prince in last year's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, it wasn't the first time Wonder Woman had been portrayed in live action. And while Gadot's Wonder Woman debuts in her own feature length film this weekend, the original actress — Lynda Carter — is still excited to have been able to portray the character.

"If I'm in the airport, people will come up and just hug me because they feel like they can -- and that's the greatest," Carter told Entertainment Weekly. "They just want to hug because some place, some memory in their lives, I meant something to them."

Carter's stint as Princess Diana of Themyscira began in 1975 as she portrayed the titular character in a show that ended up lasting three seasons, splitting time between ABC and CBS.

Having been the sole live action cast member to play the character in 40-plus years, Carter popped back into the superhero genre this past fall as she assumed the role of President Olivia Marsdin in a few episodes of Supergirl this season.

Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.

Wonder Woman opens in theaters June 2, 2017.
