“For Batman, it was really important for Zack that we created a whole new Batman,” Wilkinson told DC All Access in Oct. 2015. “And he said, ‘The most important thing for our Batman is that he comes across a real hulking, big guy.’ He’s super-pumped up. He’s going to be even bigger than Superman’s silhouette. So his strength is not through armor and gadgets and things, it is that he is a tower of muscle. Zack Snyder is a huge fan of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns and we looked a lot at that silhouette.”

As part of a bonus featurette included with the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition Blu-ray set, Wilkinson went into more detail about his Batsuit approach. “Zack really wanted the costume to look like it had been around for a long time,” he explained. “From head to toe there’s wear and tear, there’s scratches, there’s bulletholes… There’s all sorts of signs that he’s been out there on the streets for a long time.”

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film features Oscar-winner Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent and also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.
