After the events of season 4, Diggle finds himself a bit lost, and it will take him some time to figure out what that next step is. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim discussed Diggle’s course trajectory with EW.
“He is searching for that moral compass that he lost at the end of season 4. He discovers that Chechnya is the wrong place for him to discover his moral compass. Things do not go according to plan for him, and there’s something that happens in the first three episodes that is fairly significant and it’s the circumstances that will ultimately bring him back to Star City, but he’s not going to be the same. He’s not going to be able to live his life the way he had been living it before.”
Even when he returns to team Arrow, the character won’t be the same, and it remains to be seen how he’ll interact with some of the new recruits that Oliver and Felicity have assembled, including Wild Dog, Artemis, and Curtis, who is taking a bigger role on the team. EW also let out that episode four will focus on Diggle and Oliver a great deal.
Diggle will be getting an updated look to go with his new attitude in the form of a modernized and sleeker helmet, which you can get a closer look at here. You can also view what ComicBook.com’s Russ Burlingame thought about the premiere episode here.
