DC Films isn’t keeping quiet about its ambitious film slate. A series of new movies have already been added to the studio’s line-up this year, but it looks like Joss Whedon is the only reason DC Films green-lit a standalone Batgirl movie.

According to a new report by Variety, DC Films didn’t even have Batgirl on its radar before Whedon approached the studio. Warner Bros. wasn’t considering a movie about the heroine “until Whedon confessed to his love of Barbara Gordon and her masked alter ego.”
Clearly, Whedon’s interest sparked something over at Warner Bros. The director convinced the studio with his Batgirl pitch, and Whedon is developing the film whilst working on Justice League‘s reshoots.
The new report about Batgirl‘s order has answered a major question fans had about the film. The DC Comics fandom has embraced Barbara Gordon for years now, but Warner Bros. had never hinted at its own pursuit of the character. As it turns out, the studio really wasn’t interested in Batgirl until an A-list director persuaded executives to look her way.
Following the overwhelming success of Wonder Woman, Warner Bros. is surely glad to have another heroine waiting in the wings. Audiences praised the DC Extended Universe for its take on Diana Prince, so Whedon may want to meet up with director Patty Jenkins to talk about his passion project.
Whedon still has a bit of time to talk Batgirl with the Wonder Woman visionary if he wants. According to DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns, the director won’t start on Batgirl until next year.
Johns told IGN, “We are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year, and that’s just the start.”
