It’s impossible to ignore the success of superhero films who nab an R-rating. In just over a year, 20th Century Fox has changed the game by releasing two higher-rated films focused on Marvel heroes. In 2016, the world welcomed Deadpool with open arms as the raunchy, NSFW action-comedy roared in theaters. And, this past weekend, the studio worked magic once again with Logan.
R-rated superhero films have shown proof of concept, and fans are now more curious than ever whether other studios may roll out such projects in the future. Marvel Studios may have a harder time taking on the challenge given its relationship with Disney, but DC Entertainment has a bit more wiggle room in that regard.

And, now, the studio is finally commenting on whether the would pursue such a project.
In an exclusive report by The Wrap, a source from within the company stressed plans for an R-rated film would not be dismissed. “One hundred percent yes. With the right character(s),” the source said.
Of course, fans should be encouraged by this kind of news. Audiences have made their opinions about R-rated films know with both cash and even online polls. Not only have films like Logan made bank at the box office, but fans have also signaled their interest in darker superhero films on sites like Fandango. Last week, the site conducted a survey about whether fans wanted more R-rated superhero films, and the response was overwhelming. More than 70% of respondents said they wanted more R-rated superhero blockbusters, and nearly 90% said they were seeing Logan because of its more violent tone.
So, who knows? Maybe DC Entertainment’s solo film about Nightwing will get that sort of gritty rating.
Right now, fans expect most of the DC Extended Universe to carry a PG-13 rating as Justice League and Wonder Woman gear up for releases this year. As Aquaman and The Flash continue to move towards production, the more family-friendly heroes will likely avoid the restricted rating to make the characters more accessible to audiences of every age. But, as the DCUE continues to pursue more one-off titles, it is impossible for DC Entertainment to entertain the thought.
