Snyder is currently working alongside Rafael Albuquerque on the new arc “The First Ally”, but he already has plans in place for the arc that takes place afterward. Those plans have been in development for some time, and in a recent interview with Newsarama Snyder says there might not be more to say after that. “So, yeah… after this arc with All-Star Batman, when I get to the story with Sean – which is the one I’ve been kind of waiting to do for three years or more – that to me very well might be the last Batman story that I do proper Batman for a while. It’s sort of a capstone to a lot of things I’ve been thinking about with him over the years.”

Describing the story, Snyder says “It’s almost like a Mad Max Batman story in the future. It’s really nuts, but it connects the continuity. When we do that, I’d like to try to take the back-ups out, reduce the price and do it a little differently, depending on what shapes up with some of the editorial changes going on as well. That story is one I’ve been dying to do. So whatever format we wind up doing it in, I can’t wait.” When Snyder said it’s been years in development with artist Sean Murphy, he wasn’t kidding.

“Yeah! I’ve been thinking about that story for years – the same way I’ve been thinking about Metal for a couple years. I’ve never planned more for anything than for Metal and for that story. So those are the big two. But that’s the plan for All-Star Batman right now.”

There will be many who are disappointed to see him leave the iconic character. The good news is writers like Tom King and James Tynion IV are also creating some wonderful Batman stories in the universe at the moment, and can more than handle the weight. It will also give Snyder a chance to stretch his wings on another part of the DC Universe, and that’s a win-win proposition.
