Now that Supergirl‘s sophomore season is in the books, fans are wondering what is next for the show when it returns in the fall. And according to the series’ star, the third season could involve a much-anticipated group from the DC Comics lore.
Speculation has been circulating for quite a while that the Legion of Super-Heroes could appear on Supergirl. For the uninitiated, the Legion of Super-Heroes is a team of teen-aged superheroes from a thousand years in the future. Headquartered on Earth, they come from a variety of different worlds and have a variety of different powers (although each of them wields a Legion flight ring, which provides its wearer with a universal translator, the ability to fly, and some other perks).

One of those rings came into Supergirl‘s fold back in season one, when it was shown in the Fortress of Solitude. (It was also featured in a ‘vibe’ during an episode of The Flash soon after.) This made fans suspicious, only to have their suspicions echoed by an easter egg in ‘Supergirl Lives’, a Kevin Smith-directed episode of season two. In it, Mon-El (Chris Wood) yelled out “grife”, a noteworthy part of the Legion’s slang.
So could the Legion actually appear on Supergirl? The Girl of Steel herself, Melissa Benoist, says it’s likely.
“The Legion Ring, I believe, is on its way.” Benoist explained to TVLine. “But I don’t know exactly when.”
That uncertainty will definitely raise some eyebrows – especially for those who are wondering how Mon-El will return to the show. The leading theory has been that the Daxamite has – like in the comics – entered the Phantom Zone, where he will remain in stasis until he is found in the 30th Century by the other members of the Legion.
It sounds like this could very easily occur onscreen, but Benoist’s response indicates that it might not be happening as soon as Supergirl returns in the fall. Either way, the proper introduction of the Legion of Super-Heroes would certainly be an awesome addition to Supergirl, and to the DCTV universe as a whole.
