Iris West and Barry Allen have been through a lot together through three seasons on The CW’s The Flash. Amid Barry’s attempts to thwart her prophesized death at the hands of his future self, the two got engaged but could not follow through on their plans due to the Scarlet Speedster being trapped in the Speed Force.

And though the Flash will escape that prison in the beginning of Season 4, his relationship with Iris will not see smooth sailing afterward. But don’t worry — according to the stars of the series, it will be a comedic affair.
Speaking at the Heroes & Villains FanFest in New Jersey, Candice Patton hinted at her character’s relationship moving forward, as reported by Autumn Kelly of Newsweek.
“This season… we’re getting a little more light hearted and funny,” Patton said. “Barry, once he comes back from the Speed Force, Barry and Iris have to go to couples therapy and kind of work through those issues. So there’s some really funny stuff coming up.”

The past few seasons have been increasingly dark for Barry’s normally optimistic outlook, and it appears that Season Four would continue that trend based on the preview for the premiere. But the cast and producers’ frequent comments make it seem like that’s not the case.
However, Barry still appears to be down in the dumps when he comes out of the Speed Force, what with a beard and all. As the classic TV trope infers, characters with beards are always depressed.
It sounds like Andrew Kreisberg and the rest of the team behind The Flash want to have fun with that and put the characters in relatable and awkward situations. Barry has been teased as being the happy-go-lucky character that fans from the comics have come to expect.
We’ll see if Iris and Barry can keep it together when The Flash returns to the CW on Tuesday, October 10.
