After a decade on air, Supernatural continues to go strong over on The CW. The hit drama stands as one of the network's longest running series and is the last relic from The WB's era where shows like Smallville reigned. Having kicked off its 12th season, Supernatural continues to tug at the heartstrings of fans or bowl them over with humor. And, now, fans have learned the beloved series almost had an epic crossover with Superman himself.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, a former production assistant from Supernatural revealed the series was in talks at one point to crossover with Smallville. Jackson Stewart said writers during his tenure had "a lot of really cool ideas."

"They had an episode where they really wanted to do a Superman curse that was about every actor who plays Superman ends up getting killed. So they find out that Tom Welling from Smallville is next and have to save him. I thought that was one of the funniest ideas that I'd heard," he recalled.

Obviously, it would be somewhat difficult to make the idea work; Smallville was a serious reimagining of Superman's origin story and not meant to be a meta television series. However, if there was a way, Supernatural would have made it work. The series is known for its outlandish and meta episodes after all.

In Season 2, Supernatural poked fun at Hollywood when it aired "Hollywood Babylon." The show saw the Winchesters investigate a haunting at a horror movie set. The next season, the show took on Ghostbusters with its episode "Ghostfacers." And, in Season 6, Supernatural outdid itself when "The French Mistake" was aired. The hilarious episode saw the Winchesters thrust into an alternate universe where they were actors on a show called Supernatural and all hell broke loose - literally.

Smallville isn't the only DC series that has toyed around with a crossover of this magnitude. Earlier this year, Arrow's Stephen Amell told fans that his series needed to crossover with Supernatural ASAP.

"This is the crossover we need," Amell wrote on Instagram where he posted a photo of The CW's Arrowverse actors along with Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.
