This year will be a memorable one for DC Films. Along with Warner Brothers, the studio has been hard at work to bring its DC Extended Universe to life. Last year, films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad roused interest in the project, but 2017 will make or break the universe. In June, Wonder Woman is set to have its long-awaited premiere before Justice League hits theaters in November. Now, the director for the latter project is taking time to talk about the DC Comics heroine and explain how she evolves in the films.

Speaking to USA Today, Zack Snyder gave fans a sneak-peek into the characterization of Wonder Woman within the DCEU. The director said his ensemble flick is “all about the filling-out of this massive comic-book pantheon with the biggest and coolest heroes we could.” Of course, that desire would necessitate DC Films to introduce Wonder Woman, and the heroine will have a complicated arc to go through this year.
According to Snyder, the standalone Wonder Woman movie will see Diana discover that “humanity isn’t always the most kind and awesome thing.” The movie, which is set during World War I, will then give way to Justice League. When it comes to the latter film, Snyder says the gritty modern-day blockbuster will depict a full evolved Wonder Woman.
“It has its moments, but it can be brutal, and her coming to terms with that dichotomy is what we come to learn about her. And in Justice League, she’s fully evolved into someone who’s embraced mankind, partly through Superman’s sacrifice. She’s like, ‘All right, I’ve got to pick it up.’ “
Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and is written by Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).
