Thus far, both Sony and Microsoft have solemnly promised their “half-step” consoles the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X will only offer players various visual enhancements like 4K resolution and HDR support. They’ve insisted basic gameplay will remain the same between the standard and enhanced versions of games, and that people who don’t have a fancy 4K TV aren’t missing out on any experiences by buying the base model PS4 or Xbox One. Well, that may be about to change.

It seems Agents of Mayhem, the new open-world action game from the makers of Saints Row, will be using the power of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X for something other than extra visual polish. In an interview with WCCF Tech, Volition said they’d be using the hardware to create a more crowded, vibrant open world.

“Whenever a new platform or upgrades to an existing platform is announced, we take a look at what it will take to support it. Agents of Mayhem will have HDR support for the PlayStation 4 and PC. Xbox One X is not released when the game comes out, so specs for the game on that platform are still TBD.

The more powerful platforms will see an increase in population, civilian and vehicular, making a more dense and vibrant Seoul to create mayhem in. The updates for Pro and Xbox One X are mostly about city density and utilizing the stronger GPUs to render more population, both pedestrian and vehicular.”

Agents of Mayhem is all about creating havoc in a busy, living city, so the fact that the PC, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions of the game will have a more “vibrant” world filled with additional people and cars to mess with is no minor aesthetic upgrade. It sounds like it could change the core experience in a serious way.

In the same interview, Volition detailed the scope of Agents of Mayhem, and it sounds like we’re in for a fairly meaty adventure. The game’s “main path” will take players around 20 hours to complete, and that main path will only take you through about half of the game’s content.

Agents of Mayhem will be unleashed on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on August 15.
