We already know that the month of December was a big winner for hardware, with the Nintendo Switch selling another two-plus million units, and PlayStation 4 continuing to perform well, also. (The Xbox One X didn't do too shabby either.) But, now, with official numbers provided by the NPD, we're able to see just what video games did well for the Christmas month as well.

According to the group, console software rose a little bit from the previous year to $1.24 billion, a slight increase from the $1.22 billion reported for 2016. However, PC software didn't fare as well, as it dropped down to $40 million, down from the previous 2016 figure of $48 million).

As for what games ruled in December, one clear winner was easy to see – Activision's Call of Duty: WWII. The game has already sold ten million units since its release, and it managed to hold the number one spot, despite other games being available for purchase.

However, surprisingly enough, close behind in second place was Star Wars: Battlefront II. Despite controversy with its loot box system and sales that didn't fare as well as the original game, it still managed to attract a healthy audience on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. (PC sales numbers were not reported by Electronic Arts.)

Super Mario Odyssey was close behind in third place, followed by 2K Sports' NBA 2K18 and Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to round out the top five. Other notable placements include PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which notched a seventh place position with its release on Xbox One; Assassin's Creed Origins, which performed admirably in an eight place spot; and Grand Theft Auto V, still shocking after all these years with a tenth place position.

Here are the full top twenty games, according to the NPD:

  1. Call of Duty: WWII
  2. Star Wars: Battlefront II
  3. Super Mario Odyssey
  4. NBA 2K18
  5. Mario Kart 8
