Destiny 2 Hits PC Today: Five Tips for New Players
Prepare yourselves, Guardians. Today Destiny 2 finally launches on PC, and for the first time ever [...]
Do Public Events When You Need to Level Up
Needing a quick boost, or looking for some new gear? Since the game just launched there are going to be more concurrent players logged on and sharing your world than in the months going forward, so take advantage of that by taking part in as many public events as you can!
Public Events are like little mini-quests, without any of the fluff. Most of them involve warding off waves of enemies while protecting a certain area, or else traveling from area to area on a small section of the map to take out key enemies. Each event will last anywhere from 3-6 minutes, and at the end you're rewarded with experience, NPC tokens, loot, and glimmer.
Travel to the planet of your choice, and start stalking all of the Public Event icons -- you'll usually find one that has just started or is about to begin.
prevnextSave All of Your Rare and Legendary Scout Rifles
Screw it. We're sick of seeing the MIDA Multi-Tool everywhere in the Crucible, but we can't very well let you venture into the PvP meta without one. After you complete the main story and meet the soft power level cap of 265 / 270, you're going to want to initiate a quest line given to you by Banshee that will eventually yield what is regarded to be the best scout rifle in the game, the MIDA Multi-Tool.
As one part of the quest, you're going to have to dismantle several rare (or legendary) scout rifles. This obviously takes zero effort, but if you don't have scout rifles laying around in your inventory, this leg of the quest can end up taking the longest as you grind through hordes of enemies and random Public Events just waiting for scout rifles to drop.
Do yourself a favor, and hold onto a handful of those bad boys.
prevnextDon't Claim Exotic Quest Rewards Until You Hit Your Power Level Cap
So remember what we were saying about the MIDA Multi-Tool? You'll want to wait to complete that quest until you reach the soft level cap of 265 (270 with mods). As you level up, weapons of all rarity types will drop at your power level or above -- until you reach the power level cap. At the end game, most of the legendary drops you find will level out at 265, with the exception of exotic weapons and armor, which will typically drop about 10 levels higher.
It's important to note that when legendary or exotic engrams drop from enemies in the wild, the power level is determined right there and then. Pick them up and decrypt them. The power level of exotic rewards from NPCs, however, will not be determined until you redeem them, and those will be based on your base power level.
Why would you redeem an exotic weapon or armor at power level 260 and then be faced with the chore of infusing it to higher power levels, when you could just wait a bit and redeem the same weapons or armor at a power level of 275-285?
prevnextJoin a Clan
You'll want to join up with a clan as soon as you can. Even if you don't find a group of players that you know personally, if you get a clan invite, go ahead and accept it (even if you're not going to stay for the long run).
When you're part of a clan, you have a few more opportunities every single week to earn powerful loot. There are multiple clan quests that you can complete for legendary engrams, and no matter what you're doing, you'll be earning your own personal experience contribution to your clan. By simply playing the game normally as part of a clan, you'll very likely meet your weekly experience contribution quota and unlock a legendary engram. There's no reason not to claim those rewards.
Plus, who knows! You may even find a great group of Guardians to run the raid with!
prevnextBright Engrams Will Never Give You Weapons or Armor
As you level up and complete main story quests you'll be rewarded with Bright Engrams. These are shiny. They're beautiful. They're purple. They always end up giving you multiple legendary items or shaders. You'll decrypt a Bright Engram and unlock a legendary new ship or sparrow. Man, they're great, and soon you'll be tempted to buy a few to get more awesome stuff.
That's fine, but you'll never get any gear. Bright Engrams will only ever give you cosmetic stuff and ships. It's all Eververse stuff. It's easy, after decrypting your first few Bright Engrams, to walk away thinking that this is a real-money shortcut to all of the coolest gear in the game, but it's not. Save your money, unless you just really want some new ships and shaders which, let's be honest, we all do.
