Every once in a while, a new EA Sports FC game, aka a new FIFA game, is released that feels like an evolution in the series, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Most releases, though, just feel like the slightest iteration on last year’s title. EA Sports FC 26 is an example of the latter. If you are looking for substantial improvements, you won’t find them. In fact, you will find the exact opposite. Many of the problems that plagued last year’s game also plague this year’s game.

To this end, one of the top posts on the EA Sports FC Reddit page right now is a post that points out a major gameplay problem: AI defenders are the most useless thing ever, designed to infuriate you and make you throw your controller. More specifically, rather than run with the player with the ball or the player making a run, an AI defender will often run away from the ball or the run. There is literally zero reason for this to ever happen, yet it happens all the time. The post doesn’t mention that this was a problem in last year’s game, as well as the last few installments before it, but the comments do.
“Made Me Stop Playing”
“They do it in 25 as well, made me stop playing career on legendary, because stupid things like that make a massive difference at this level,” reads the top comment on the popular post. Another comment adds: “EA Sports, fix one problem and break many others. Rinse and repeat every year.”
So, what the heck is happening? Well, nobody knows for sure, not even EA, apparently, as it won’t fix the issue. There’s a chance the defender in the video is a fullback and thus retreating to his position rather than sensing the threat due to poor programming. This is just a theory, though, and doesn’t explain why this doesn’t always happen, and why it almost never happens on AI-controlled teams.
Of course, EA has not acknowledged this issue in EA Sports FC 26, and there’s probably no fix coming. If the fix were easy, it would have been made already. The fix is clearly difficult, and with the team forced to pump a new game out every year, difficult problems are typically never solved. For what it is worth, EA Sports FC 26 is a better and more authentic game than EA Sports FC 25, but the differences are marginal, and that’s not exactly a high bar to clear. All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum.
