The PlayStation 4 exclusive God of War has received plenty of attention recently after E3 as the game builds up to its 2018 release date, and the game’s developers have just revealed that the upcoming title will feature some teamwork during combat between Kratos and his son.

Sony Santa Monica Studio, the developers behind the newest installation in the God of War series, spoke with OPM UK about their upcoming game to provide some details on what kind of dynamic fighting players can look forward to in the game.

There’s a really cool move where he [Atreus] jumps on the back enemy’s back and you hit the Square button, which is for the son, and he’ll jump above the enemy’s back and start firing arrows, and then you can throw your axe,” said Aaron Kaufman, the marketing producer for the studio. “And that’s just one example of the dynamism between him [Kratos] and Atreus.”

This kind of father-son teamwork is something that players will surely look forward to, but it also indicates a bit of a deviation from previous God of War games. While the protagonist Kratos would occasionally enlist the help of others on his journeys, he didn’t rely on them too much. He would use allies and enemies alike to his advantage, sometimes even disposing of them if it would serve to better help him progress in his mission. Kratos is much older in this game though, and though the gameplay that’s been shown certainly makes it seem like he’s still got what it takes in fights, his soft spot for his son and his age have likely made him more willing to adopt some forms of teamwork.

Speaking of the older games, Kaufman also explained within the same interview that this game was indeed a sequel to the last game, one that would be quite involved for Kratos.

“It’s an indeterminate amount of time between the end of God of War III and the beginning of the game,” Kaufman said. “We wanted to put Kratos on a deeply personal quest.”

God of War is projected to be released sometime in 2018.
