New Digimon Story Game Is an Instant Best Seller, But Fans Are Frustrated With One Surprise Feature

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is officially out in the world. It released a smidge early on Steam, but as of October 3rd, gamers on PC and PS5 are returning to the Digital World in this brand-new installment. And clearly, plenty of fans were ready and waiting, as Time Stranger leapt to the top of the Steam Best Seller charts shortly after it became available on the platform. The Digimon RPG is maintaining steady concurrent player counts, and most fans are thrilled with the game. But one DLC decision is leaving some players feeling bitter.

Like most games these days, Digimon Story: Time Stranger had a few different editions up for grabs ahead of launch. Along with the Standard Edition, players could opt for a Digital Deluxe Edition with bonus content, including a Season Pass. There’s also a $120 Ultimate Edition with even more digital perks, and a Collector’s Edition. Many players felt that, at that price tag, the Ultimate Edition should have pretty much guaranteed access to every extra available in Time Stranger at launch. But that turns out not to be the case, and some players are furious about it.

Time Stranger Outer Dungeon DLC Alienates Players

At $120, the Ultimate Edition of Digimon Story: Time Stranger isn’t cheap. But it includes a ton of digital DLC and a Season Pass. So, players who opted to pay for this version of the highly anticipated Digimon game assumed that everything would be unlocked for them at release. It turns out, however, that the game has yet another built-in purchase option that asks players to shell out even more money.

The feature in question is Time Stranger‘s Outer Dungeons, accessed through the In-Between Theater. This area is another place to grind for experience points and materials. But if you try to select this option in the menu, you’ll be prompted to head to the PlayStation (or Steam) store. These dungeons are locked behind a paywall, asking for an additional $7.99 to enter. And for many players, that’s a wild move at launch, one approaching the Mega Dimensions DLC controversy for Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Many gamers are downright refusing to pay up for this extra feature. But those who did decide to check it out are often left wishing they hadn’t. As an EXP grind area, it’s definitely optional content. You don’t need it to enjoy the game’s story or get your hands on useful items. But those who have explored the Outer Dungeons feel that they might make the game too easy. As one Redditor who tried the dungeons once and never returned says, the Outer Dungeons “trivialize the game” by making it too easy to get money and resources.

While this DLC does offer another way for players to grind resources and experience, many fans are frustrated to find this unannounced day-one add-on in the game. After all, Time Stranger is on the more expensive end for games at $70 for the Standard Edition. Plus, there were plenty of options for players to spend extra money for things like costume DLC and the Season Pass already. Having another paywalled feature on day one isn’t quite landing with fans, especially since the feature can remove the challenging grind that many Digimon Stry fans have come to love about the franchise.

That said, some players do appreciate having another space to grind. And because the feature is fully optional, not buying it doesn’t really negatively impact your play experience. It’s just a menu option right alongside the Digifarm that some players will choose to ignore. So, once you get over the irritation of it, the Outer Dungeons don’t negatively impact the overall Time Stranger experience too much, even if players were shocked to uncover them at first.
