At nearly nine minutes long, Sony’s big E3 2017 trailer for Spider-Man was jam-packed with information, but one of the details fans have fixated on is Peter Parker’s new outfit. Why is the spider symbol on his chest white instead of black? Some fans like it, while others hate it, but, apparently, it isn’t just a random stylistic choice. When asked about the new look on Twitter, developer Insomniac Games insisted there was a method to their madness:

Okay, so Spidey’s new duds have a purpose, but that’s not going to stop some fans from continuing to hate them. Well, don’t worry, it turns out you’ll have options. According to another tweet from Insomniac, players will be able to dress Peter Parker in a variety of outfits.

Some rather mixed messages from Insomniac here. The new white symbol Spider-Man outfit has a storyline explanation and purpose, but you can still just switch it out? How will that effect the game’s narrative? Maybe you can only change your outfit under certain conditions or in particular areas of the game? Unfortunately, Insomniac hasn’t clarified.
They also haven’t given any hints as to what alternate Spider-Man outfits we can expect. I would put good money on a Spider-Man: Homecoming inspired costume being included. We also know Miles Morales is in the game, so could we see an Ultimate Spider-Man outfit? I suppose it would be bad form for Peter Parker to steal Miles’ look, but who knows โ maybe the game will also have alternate Spider-Men to go with the different outfits?
Spider-Man swings exclusively onto PS4 sometime in 2018. Need more information about Spider-Man? Here’s everything you need to know.
