A new MMORPG is available on Steam for free. It’s not as highly rated as Steam’s other new free game, which has a 96/100 rating, but it’s new and free for all the MMORPG fans out there looking for something new to play. Those on Steam Deck rather than a traditional PC are going in dark, though, because not only does Valve note Steam Deck compatibility is “Unknown,” but not a single one of the game’s 953 user reviews makes note of Steam Deck. Speaking of user reviews, the free MMORPG currently has a 73% approval rating, which is not great, but decent, especially for a free game.

The new free Steam game in question was specifically released on August 13, and it’s Chaomoon’s 2D platformer MMORPG, Soul’s Remnant. If this sounds like a unique blend of two genres, it’s because it is. Very unique. And this is one of the game’s strongest selling points. Inherently, this mixture is not for everyone, but if you like 2D platformers and if you like MMORPGs, it’s a great blend.
2D Platformer MMORPG
According to the aforementioned developer, Chaomoon, which debuts with this release, the new free-to-play 2D platformer MMORPG puts a strong emphasis on social gameplay and exploration. In it, you will customize your character with the game’s “classless” system and then team up with others to take on dungeons, monsters, and bosses. That said, you and your new companions will need to be extra wary when night falls, because the game gets a lot harder when it does.
As noted, the game has a decent 73% user review score, the result of 696 user reviews being positive and 260 being negative. The latter reviews largely lament the game’s banning system, and not the actual game itself. Meanwhile, for those worried about egregious pay-to-win microtransactions, reviews note that it is not a problem here. Many of the user reviews also point out the obvious connection to MapleStory.
“A couple of years ago I tried to get back into MapleStory, but they were toooo greedy,” reads one of the aforementioned user reviews. “This game feels like a non-greedy MapleStory.”
Another user review adds: “I’ve only played a bit so far, but it was one of the most fun indie MMOs I’ve tried. The music, art, and character building are all really well done! It’s like a more modern MapleStory made by a passionate indie dev.”
It’s unclear what the game’s future will be and how long it will be supported, as it’s unclear how profitable its free-to-play system is currently. To this end, be cautious about spending money in the game, or at least spending more than you would normally pay for a game like this.
