It’s a game that’s slowly but surely been working its way back into the esports circuit, and, soon enough, casual players will be able to experience its glory yet again. It’s Windjammers, and it finally has a release date!
The team at DotEmu confirmed today that the game, which involves throwing around a Frisbee at rapid speed and attempting to score goals on your opponent, will arrive on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on August 29th. There’s no word if it will be cross-buy or cross-play supported yet.

The game will feature six different characters in all, each with their advantages and disadvantages. You can check them out in the trailer above, which also shows the game in action, so you have a pretty good idea what to expect.
Windjammers will come with a number of updated features, including an improved art style, better graphic fidelity, online multiplayer, five different game modes, and the ability to form your own competitive league, if you know enough players that are willing to join. (Hey, Austin Creed, where you at?!)
It did rather well with its closed beta last month, with players reporting on how well it was performing. “Thanks to you, the community, we received tons of feedback regarding bugs and issues, and also the ergonomy, menus and matchmaking system,” the developer said in a recent PlayStation Blog post. “You also provided many useful ideas regarding the general gaming experience. Most importantly, your comments confirmed that we’d captured the fun, immersive experience of the original.” (The original Windjammers game came out for the Neo-Geo several years ago.)
On top of that, for fans that can’t get enough of the game, DotEmu will also release a line of Windjammers products in time for the game’s release, including an official Frisbee, t-shirts from the 90’s, a lapel pin and a hat. We’ve included the items in an attached gallery, so you can see them in all their glory. They’ll be available for purchase here starting August 29th. Someone pre-order us a shirt, yeah?
We’ll be playing around with Windjammers when it arrives close to the end of summer for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.
