There are plenty of confusing things in this world. Rubik's cubes, rocket science, and IKEA furniture instructions all rank up there, but Hollywood has all three beat with its X-Men continuity. Over the years, 20th Century Fox has released a slew of Marvel films based on the uncanny franchise, but fans were sent for a loop when it was reported that the last Wolverine film would not take place in the pre-constructed universe.
UP NEXT: Hugh Jackman Says Logan Is Set In Different Universe From X-Men Films
Now, James Mangold is weighing in on the issue, and the director is setting everything straight.
Of course, the problem all began when Hugh Jackman sat down for an interview with Digital Spy. It was there Jackman said that Logan is not in direct continuity with the previous X-Men films.
"Not only is it different in terms of timeline and tone, it's a slightly different universe," Jackman said. "It's actually a different paradigm and that will become clear [when you see the movie]."
However, Mangold has said Jackman's words were taken out of context and that Logan very much takes place within the expansive X-Men film universe. Taking to Twitter, the director told a fan, "[I] Don't think @RealHughJackman said that exactly," referring to the star's comment on timeline adherence.
"Simple fact. We take place in 2029, 5 yrs past anything depicted in XMEN film."
Of course, fans already knew about when Logan was set. ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis had a chance to chat with Mangold where he told our site, "It's year 2029 when the movie takes place."

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.
Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
