Thor 3 is built around the titular event of “Ragnarok,” which is the driving force of the story. However, connecting how the Ragnarok prophecy relates to the final outcome of the film may be a bit confusing for some viewers.

In case you want to know (or are unclear on the details), here is Thor: Ragnarok‘s ending explained!

A King’s Power

In the final battle against Cateย Blanchett’sย Hela, Thor finds himself hopelessly outclassed. Within minutes, Helaย hasย Thor beaten downย and on his knees, and even adds injury to insult by slashing out his eye.ย

Whileย Helaย is going for the kill, Thor enters a vision where he meets his father Odin,ย in theย field in Norway where the All-Father died.ย Odin reveals to Thor that his broken hammerย Mjolnirย wasย a power conduit, notย a power source, thereby awakening Thor’sย true internal powers as a god of thunder.ย

With that power, Thor becomes stronger, can fly without Mjolnir’sย help, and is able to call down and wield lightning in a variety of ways. While this new power isn’t enough to defeat Hela, it does set Thor up to be a living weapon, with more godlike power than he’s ever had before.ย

Thor Ragnarok Ending Spoilers

When Thor’s newly-awakened power isn’t enough to defeat Hela, he once again searches his vision of Odin and has another realization: he needs to think less like a superhero, and more like the new King of Asgard.

As Odin explains, Asgardย is a people and a culture, not a physical place. Thor spent two yearsย after the end ofย Avengers: Age of Ultronย trying to decipher and stop the Ragnarokย prophecyย from being fulfilled; but as he’s watching Helaย and her undeadย soldiers slaughtering the last of the Asgardianย people, Thor realizes that sacrificing Asgardย (the place) to saveย its people is the only real choice to be made.ย

While Thor distracts Helaย in battle, he sends Loki into Odin’s vault toย place The Crown of Surturย on The Eternal Flame, which wasย the prophesiedย cause of Ragnarokย that Thor worked so hard to avoid. When Lokiย puts the crown on the The Flame, it restores Surturย toย a giant, all-powerful form, and the fire demon thenย lays waste to Helaย and all of Asgard.ย

Thor, Loki, Hulk, Valkyrie, and Heimdallย all escape Ragnarokย with a spaceship full of surviving Asgardians. Their destination is the Norwegian site where Odin died; a placeย where the All-Father felt Asagardย was destined to be reborn. However, the journey is barely underway before the sons of Odin run into a big problem, during a post-credits button scene:ย
