Is Spider-Man's 'Infinity War' Look Based on This Suit and Not Iron Spider?

The Avengers: Infinity War trailer gave us many new insights about how the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are faring when Thanos comes looking for the Infinity Stones, and for Peter Parker / Spider-Man, the arrival of Thanos and his Black Order over NYC means finally getting serious and suiting up in the armored suit Tony Stark presented to him at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming!

Ever since Homecoming's finale, fans have been speculating on what Spider-Man's new costume will do - and also what Marvel Comics suit it's based on. Most fans have been referring to the new suit as The Iron Spider, but a new theory says that there may be a more recent inspiration for Spider-Man's Infinity War suit:

As CBR points out, the look of the Spider-Man costume in Infinity War is much less like the red-and-gold design of the Iron Spider costume from the comics, and much more like the Spider-Man costume designed for the 2016 Marvel Comics storyline, "Spider-Man: Worldwide".

Writer Dan Slott and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli used "Worldwide" as a platform for expanding Peter Parker's role in the Marvel Universe into that of a global CEO of Parker Industries, who managed his company with his bodyguard, Spider-Man, watching his back. The suit used in the storyline was a design very much like the classic Spider-Man costume, but with armor instead of fabric, and light up eyes and emblem. It's basically a description that perfectly fits what we're seeing in Infinity War.

On the one hand, the actual inspiration for the costume isn't that important: the MCU has a long history of using iconic Marvel Comics costumes in new ways - much like when Captain America donned his Secret Avengers suit while working for S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. On the other hand, the Spider-Man "Worldwide" costume may be a very purposeful choice for inspiration; with the outcome of Avengers 3 & 4 so unsure, Tony Stark's absence (or death) could put Peter Parker into the driver's seat of Star Industries, and truly make him a world-spanning Spider-Man.

Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on May 4, 2018. Thor: Ragnarok is now playing in theaters. Other upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies include; Black Panther on February 16, 2018, Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6, 2018, Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, the fourth Avengers movie on May 3, 2019, the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 5, 2019, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2020.
