Black Panther: New Character List Reveals T’Challa’s Fallen Father Will Appear In The Film

Black Panther‘s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a devastating one, as – in true Disney fashion – the character had to watch his father die in his first few minutes on screen.

According to a recent press release however, the fallen father of T’Challa – and former king of Wakanda – will actually appear in the solo Black Panther movie.

When Marvel released press materials for the new film – which began production today – the cast list included an actor by the name of John Kani.

You may not recognize that actor by his name, but Kani portrayed the great King T’Chaka in Captain America: Civil War. The movie featured a scene of the king speaking with T’Challa early on, but the character was killed by an attack on a number of world leaders shortly after.

It’s already been reported that Black Panther will feature a 1990’s flashback, shedding a light on the background of T’Challa. It’s very likely that this will be the place where Kani appears. If not here, the only other option would be having T’Challa receive visions of his father as he struggles to take on the mantle of King.

Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

Directed by Ryan Coogler (“Fruitvale Station,” “Creed”), “Black Panther” stars Chadwick Boseman in the title role alongside Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba. The film arrives in theaters on February 16, 2018.
