Charlie Cox Teases How Daredevil Feels About Losing [SPOILER] in ‘The Defenders’

Marvel’s The Defenders had some major character deaths, and none of the heroes in the team was more affected by death (and resurrection) than Matt Murdock / Daredevil.

In a recent interview with THR, Daredevil actor Charlie Cox teased how Matt Murdock will be affected by the death of his mentor Stick (who was killed by Elektra) when Daredevil returns for Season Three on Netflix.

According to the actor:

Yeah, it all happens quite quickly. I’m imagining it’s something that when the dust settles, he’ll have to revisit that grief. At the same time, the relationship with Stick was a difficult one for Matt. They were always at odds. Maybe it will be paradoxically quite freeing to him, to not be constantly wondering if Stick is going to show up again at the most inopportune moment. One thing that will happen is he’ll have to realize how much he loved that man, and how grateful he is for everything he did. That will be quite a painful moment, I imagine.

Daredevil’s Next Chapter

Ironically enough, Daredevil himself is still considered to be tragic loss, as he was last seen with Elektra at ground zero of the collapsing Midland Circle building. We know that Murdock survives, as The Defenders ends with the final shot of Matt Murdock laid up in bed within a New York convent. It was a moment that seems to be setting up the next season of Daredevil for an adaptation of a famous Marvel Comics storyline: 

BORN AGAIN

“Born Again” is a 1986 Daredevil comic book storyline in which Matt Murdock has his secret identity sold to Wilson Fisk/Kingpin by someone close to him (Karen Page), allowing Fisk to systematically dismantle Murdock/Daredevil on both sides of the mask.  

The story is famous for the very deep and introspective character story that pushes Murdock to the brink of sanity. It’s also famous for introducing Murdock’s mother, the nun known as Sister Maggie, having Murdock battle both a violent Daredevil impostor and a supervillain named Nuke, and turning Karen Page into a drug-addicted porn actress.

In the end, Matt Murdock assumes a new identity and low-level job as a cook, content to live with Karen and fight crime as Daredevil.

The ending of The Defenders Netflix miniseries certainly leaves Daredevil in a place where “Born Again” could be the Season Three story arc as the clues have been laid out pretty clearly. For more on that, be sure to read our breakdown of exactly that.
